    New amended form

When we started 2010, there was a new 1040X. Now getting ready to amend 2010, looks like the old 1040x. What happened? Does it matter which form?

There was such an out cry over the new form being indecipherable that theIRS went back to the old version. Which was a good thing!

      Question

I have an amended return to prepare for 2009, my software for 2009 is only providing the Jan 2010 Revision Date of the 1040X - which is the single column, however, the 2010 software has the more current version of Dec 2010 which is the updated 3 column 1040X

      Will IRS accept either form?

Or do I need to put some pressure on my Software??

        New or old 1040X

The IRS will accept either version of the form. My 2009 software also the single-column version.

That said, I have such a strong preference for the original two-column format that when I did a 2009 amended return, I just filled in a PDF of the current version. I did the return using my 2009 software, but then I took the figures and plugged them into the PDF from the IRS website. Of course, I had to manually reference the original return to get the figures for Column A, and I had to manually calculate the difference in Column B.

          Earlier Post

For those that are interested in this topic, I posted a rather rambling, tongue-in-cheek rant on this back in March:

The IRS finally updated Topic 308 on their website, and it no longer refers to the new design.

            Update

Update your software, too. I tend to forget to update prior years when I'm updating 2010. Maybe your software company updated your 1040-X options for prior years lately.

My software has a 3 column WORK SHEET which I would send in with the single column 1040x.
