    NT Government Shutdown

I know nobody wants to say it; but, do you think if the government shuts down they will extend the tax season by an equal amount of days it was shut down?

I think they will extend the season if they shut it down. What does everybody else think?

Not a chance - file an extension. The only delay if there is a shut down will be the refunds.

IRS Commiss not aware 1/18/11 is deadline to file 2010 tax return?

      Bloomberg: Updated: 03/31/11

Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Douglas Shulman said the Obama administration has not decided whether the IRS would process tax returns and issue refunds if Congress cannot agree to a plan to avert a halt of government spending authority on April 8.

“We’ve never had a government shutdown in the middle of the filing season before,” Shulman said in testimony before a House Ways and Means subcommittee today in Washington. “The closer we get to April 15, the more consideration and factors are at play.”

Sounds like no one told him he has until the 18th this year!

There's no reason to change the due date, since extensions are good for 6 months anyhow. If they didn't change it over their inability to be ready for itemized returns before Feb 14, I doubt they''d change it over this issue. And if you file protective extensions as the returns come in these last few weeks, you don't have to worry about the due date anyhow.

Don't care, don't care, don't care. Don't care about 4/18/11. This office is done 4/15/11 and will be closed the week of 4/18/11.

              Doesn't Matter

I like Maribeth's answer. She shuts down whether they do or not.

88% of the Federal budget is for entitlements and MUST be funded under the current way of operating. They are squabbling about a small fraction of the 12% that is left. As much grandstanding as anything else, and this is the usual situation.

I don't want to take this into a partisan political conversation, but my very non-partisan self tells me there has to be a better way than what they are doing. Doesn't matter which party.

If they are going to shut down the government then there would be no need to file tax returns, right? I view a shutdown for a week or so as a darn good start.

I just became a self-employed tax pro. Need the tax filings to continue at least until my mortgage is paid off!
