    NC Extension

Does NC still consider you extended if you did a valid Federal extension? And if not when did they change? I have a taxpayer who did a valid Federal Extension in 09 and we filed him by the October deadline but NCDOR wants FTF penalty. Now I'm about to file more people for extensions and I wonder if I should extend NC as well just to make my future a little easier.

NC has a separate extension form which must be filed. It's the D-410. Rules are basically the same as with the Federal. You should accurately estimate th balance due, but it isn't necessary to pay it all in order for the extension to be valid. There is n extra glitch with NC, though - there is a flat 10% FTP penalty for any underpayment.

( this was changed about 10 years go or so. Prior to the introduction of the D-410, it was acceptable to send NC a copy of the 4868, line through the federal numbers, and write the NC numbers in the margin)

      Filing NC extension

FWIW I have always filed a separate filing extension (Form D-410) for NC if such was needed for the IRS.

Whether NC would have "accepted" the federal, I do not know. But I would seriously doubt it.

The process of filing an extension online is so simple even a caveman can do it. If payment is due, that can be handled at the same time (with client's bank info and permission).

I guess I am way behind the times

I am used to ignoring NC until it was time to pay then filing the return with proof Federal was extended.
