    No 1099 R for rollover

Fidelity Investments told my client that they didn't send out 1099R for rollovers. They said the other company (who received the rollover money) would send them a 5498 after the end of May.

I've already had several 1099R's for rollovers. Since when isn't it necessary?

Well if they don't report it to IRS, then I don't need it on the return. But I hope there doesn't come a letter later.

If it's from a traditional IRA to a traditional IRA, then no 1099-R is needed. This is called a transfer, not a rollover, since the nature of the count hasn't change, only the custodian has. There are other types of transfers that are also not reported.

American Funds told me the same thing the other day

I seem to remember getting 1099-R's in prior years for IRA transfers, but they may in papersaving mode now.
