    Filing Status: MFS?

    Client has been separated from his wife for about 3 years. No separation decree or separate maintenance issued. No children involved. Is he required to file MFS until this happens or divorce occurs?

      Married people

      My understanding is that married people with no children can only use MFS or MFJ.

      So, no, he doesn't HAVE to file separately. They CAN file together.
      If you loan someone $20 and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
