I've never heard of any state where the entire fee is deductible. Also be careful about assuming that the basic registration fee is the only part that's not. Many areas have other fees such as smog certification that may only apply to certain areas of a state and are not deductible.

        Personal Property Tax

The fee is deductible if the registration charge is based on the value of the vehicle because then it is a personal property tax. I think Minnesota is another state where the registration fee is based on value. In WI it is based on weight and therefore Not deductible.

Most states have a basic charge that everybody pays. I have yet to see any state where the entire fee is based on the value.

Everybody should pay his income tax with a smile. I tried it, but they wanted cash

Maybe "most" would be your key word - keep looking. Also, maybe only a portion of the fee is based on value, then only a portion of your fee would be deductible.

Anyone out there from MN - I know a few years there was a charge based on value.

In MN, you subtract $35 from the amount shown as tax. Its been $35 ever since I started back in 1982.

You'd think that would have changed over the years, but it is still the same it has always been. When Jesse The Body was gov, he managed to get auto fees lowered because he didn't want to have to pay so much for his Porch, or BMW, or whatever car he was driving at the time.

How can the fee be base on value? If all the fees are the same.

                    Pub. 17 page 143

                    Personal Property Taxes:

Base only on the value of the personal property, and
Charged on a yearly basis, even if it is collected more or less than once a year.

No, the fees are not the same. You start off maybe paying $200 for a new car, and then each year it goes down as the car gets older. After about 5 years, the tax bottoms out at $35. Once it does that, there is no longer a deduction for the license tabs in MN.

                        Michigan

In Michigan the whole thing is based on value, the whole fee goes on sch A. Lic plates don't go down for old cars but new cars pay a higher fee based on value.
