A new client appeared without scheduling an appointment and advised me that she had just come from the above preparer (or whatever their name is) and they were going to charge her $135 PLUS $39.95 to electronic file the returns AND an additional fee for a RAL or something which sounded like a RAL to me. She paid her prior year preparer $65 but he has quit because he is ill. As she was leaving this above firm the representative said she owed them $35 for LISTENING to her. She told them: "Sue me". I prepared her simple return for $80.

Actually the firm is "Jackson Hewitt" and their antics do not surprise me in the least.

BTW: Their stock (JTX), once as high as $35/share, closed today at 64ยข/share.

Their bread and butter was the RAL/EITC crowd and many of their "professionals" were frequently unemployed after the first week or so of February.

No, it was a 1040 with schedule A but no further complications. I know that I should
charge more. I purposely did not use their proper name so they would not sue me.

$80 for form 1040 w/Sch A....even w/no complications, you could spent lot of time on Sch A depending on the # of entries not to mention potential multiple W-2's etc.

I have one client that is a member of a club with me and I charged him $75 for 2010. I picked him up last year as a former TurboTax user but I told him I am going to have to raise my fees to at least $100 in 2011 and encourage him to go back to TurboTax. He didnt seem to care about the $100 fee.

            To cheap.
            I would have charged:

            Fed: 70
            Sch M: 10
            Sch A: 35
            8879: 30
            State: 20

Total: $165, though I may have discounted the fee by $20-30 if it was easy and I liked the person.

            So $135-165 for my fee.
