My pilot retired from the military and did training for a commerical airline before he was actually paid by the airline.
Is that training deductible as misc subj to 2% along with job search expense? He paid for the training and for travel out of state where he trained. More specifically, it was training to qualify for flying their specific plane. So, it was not learning to fly, which is his profession, but learning to fly a different plane.
He also has a sizable 1099misc for private flying. His wife gave me all of his expenses for that, including mileage back and forth to the air strips he goes to, and lunches while at work. I told her those were commuting miles and not deductible, and that the lunches with the cronies also are not deductible. She was really disappointed, as she thought that being self employed gave them all those deductions.
Am I on target here?
