    W2 preparers

I guess this just isn't my week. I've already been chewed out by two W2 preparers. First the RR and now a trucking company. Trucking company W2 total wages 10,000, state wages (only one state) 6,000.. When I asked about other 4,000, well he didn't pay taxes on that money so that is why software printed it that way. She didn't know that she had to put that in manually. And it is not going to get done today as she is having other software problems. I didn't even ask that it get corrected today just hopefully before April 18th.
Again just venting and wondering why am I in the business?

    Sick pay?

Could the $4,000 difference in W-2 between Federal and State wages be from non-taxable, third party sick pay? Some states don't tax.

Was the state in box 15 the same as the employee's home state? Did the client move mid-year?

Wow Frazzled, I had the same conversation with the payroll gal at a local mining company.Well I didnt chew her out,but this was for local taxes. When I asked why only 13000 of the 32000 was considered income for the local return. She paused and admitted that she made an error, she didnt catch the error until October.

Now I have to break the news to the lucky client that they owe 300 in local taxes.
(In Pa.,companies are NOT forced to withhold any amount on their employees wages for local returns) I can only hope the payroll gal will be spot on for next years local wages and withholding.

          w2 info

Thanks for replying everyone. The question about another state is no. Just one. Sick pay is taxable here. The W2 preparer said that her software did not pick up on the 4000 because no tax was withheld. I wonder if the 4000 was an accumulation of small paychecks over the year that at the time were too small for any withholding. And she said that this was new software that she is using. Appearently she did not check W2s after she printed them.
