No Refund Yet Reference number 1201

I just had a client call and I efiled on 2/14. I looked on the irs site and it says reference number 1201 . It says when you call the irs mention this. Does anyone know what this means.

Was this client a refund transfer?

Did they want their tax prep fee taken out of refund?

No they paid fee to me direct by check.

A reference 1201 means the taxpayer owes some type of federal debt and part or all of the refund is being held to pay that debt. Most times when I've had to tell someone this they immediately know what they owe and realize what the reason for the delay is. If they are not sure or want more details they can call the IRS.

Thanks and I did call client and she owed one more installment from last year. She had it on auto withdrawal and april is her last payment. I told her to call them. Thanks for the information.
