Some of the Long Island towns do offer an option for the taxpayers to automatically renew their enhanced STAR exemption by giving the town authorization to be informed of the content of their New York return and then just filing a New York State tax return every year. Most clients who have that option prefer that to the alternative, but it seems like not all towns offer this. Hence, some of my clients have forms they need to complete each February from their tax returns and have to include a copy of their return.
The first option may be available to all but some are just not taking advantage of it. I have not had the time to investigate to see if there is a pattern.
