    Getting SS Earnings from Internet?

Client called and said she has not received her statement yet. She knows the number of months she received it and the monthly amount, but usually, in my experience, it is usually a different figure. Is it possible to get this information from the internet?

no. not that I know of.

She could call the SSA. the form was sent to her.
If she had it all year 2009 and 2010 the numbers are the same. there was no cola.

The monthly amount plus the Medicare premium will almost always give you the correct figure, unless the client is still working and has adjustments for prioir years.

Normally this is the case, but in a few isolated cases the numbers are different, mostly due to something having to do with a slight increase SSA gave to cover increased medicare premiums.

So best for her to call SSA for a duplicate, or, if there is local office, go by and get the duplicate printed on site.

          Adjustment to Payments

In talking to her further, she remembers that they overpaid her in 2009 and deducted the o/p in 2010 so the math of 12 X the monthly rate will not work (as usual).

The other question is, does it matter? If income is below the threshhold for SS being taxable, then a high-side estimate would do no harm.

              Once again, JohnH, GMTA!

I was just about to edit my previous response to add that but one of those pesky clients walked in the door.

                Go to locate S S office . . .

We have a local office. They will reprint statements. Faster than waiting for another to come in the mail.

I've had clients call and have it faxed here. The request must be phrased properly or SSA won't do it. This is John Doe. (? & answer session to confirm identity.) Please fax my 1099 to me (Not to my tax guy.) at xxx-xxx-xxxx.

                    See companion message.

I believe this great electronic movement to a "paperless" client brings more problems than solutions to the average tax preparer.

The ease of getting information from a website is grossly overstated, plus leaves the door open for wrong information. Hard copy is (and should be) the same information IRS gets, even though they are getting it electronically these days.
