    The Geek Squad

Client smiles when I sit down and says, "I don't have those messy documents anymore!
Just ask what you need and I've got it all ONLINE" and points to a laptop.

This is just great. Never mind the fact that I have to keep hard copies of W-2s, 1099-Rs, anything with withholding. Never mind the fact that I don't even know WHAT to ask this guy until I've seen all those "messy documents."

"@#$%!% thing won't boot!" "You SURE you got Wi-Fi here??" "I've found my bank account -- now all I have to do is add up all my contibutions for the whole year." "They're not going to let me see my IRA unless I have my PIN #, and I forgot it." "It's real easy, I'll just get my wife to look it up online while I move ahead with the rest of the return." "I'm sorry, they've changed the website and I can't seem to find it anymore..."

I could prepare returns much faster when people didn't fiddle-fart around with the computers. It's like they can't live or breathe without wanting to drag me kicking and screaming into their world of electronic overload.

OMG, yes! Had one trying to look up a 1099-INT on some handheld something or other last night . . . that was a no-go . . . she had to find the hard copy at home and call me just because $20 in interest held the whole thing up! BTW, my WI-FI is password protected. (Whatever that means, haha!)

      (Or woman.)

Give me a dang piece of paper with totals. Is that too much to ask?!
If you loan someone $20 and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

          Masculine, I assure you Rita.

You don't reckon the issuers of 1099s, Rs, Bs, DIVs, etc. have convinced their customers that a New Paperless World exists where now they don't have to mail them anything anymore.

I can just hear them now: "Makes your tax preparation easier! Can create .pdfs and read them into TurboTax. Or use our specialized "plug in" feature where nothing has to be data entered at all!! Your tax preparer will love not having to deal with messy hard copy anymore...."

More OMG yes! Just had a gentleman this morning- first time client- zapped his brokerage 1099's into TT, then added the hard copies into TT as well- seriously overstated int & divs and was gonna write IRS a check for couple grand! Of course, he was a due a refund & was delighted. (Retired engineer ) Progress is fabulous!

I had one the other day that wanted to go on my computer to look up his stock transactions. Told him I did not have time to do that and could not allow him on my computer.

I'll spend 30 minutes with a person in regards to talking to them about their tax return when they drop it off. Anything longer and they are moving on. That is one reason I schedule my appointments pretty close together. They see someone else waiting and they will hurry up.
