Sales Tax On Car Itemized Deduction?

The taxbook update says no, but I have heard everything. Please
Can you tell me for sure if the sales tax on a car can be used
as an additional itemized deduction on Federal Tax Return for 2010?
I live in a non state tax state.

There are lots of threads on this - see below. But basically: You may take sales taxes over state taxes if advantageous on Sch A.

You may add to the table amount certain purchases like sales taxes on a vehicle (and boats, planes, etc).

You may not anything not on the list to the tables but you may take all purchases for the year if they add up to more than the tables.

If you bought a New vehicle after 02/16/09 and before 01/01/10 but didn't pay the sales taxes on that vehicle in 2009 and did pay them in 2010 then you may take the special deduction that was available in 2009.

      Car sales tax

In your print out Summary chart of new law under State and Local General Sales Taxes.
The answer is The new law did not extend this provision for 2010. I live in Texas, no state tax, last year you could take the sales tax off as a itemized deduction and if you bought a large item such as a car the amount could be added to the sales tax amount shown on the
sales tax table. I don't believe you can do that this year, but I have seen so many answers and I think many of them relate to taking off your state income tax, or sales tax.
If you can help me I sincerely appreciate it.

JG gave you the answer. Schedule A didn't change, only Schedule L.

IF you choose to take the optional sales tax table amount (which a TX resident may well do) using line 5B of Schedule A, then you can add to that table amount the additional sales tax paid on vehicles and the like.

What you cannot do in 2010 (yes, this is a change!!) is get any benefit from vehicle sales tax as an "add on" to Schedule A amounts, while using line 5A of Schedule A. (Except in "no tax" states, most itemizers will likely have a greater number on line 5A than on line 5B.)

(For now - no comment on the likely unusual situation where you bought a car during 2009 but did not pay the sales tax on same until 2010.....) Research on line 7 of Schedule A should clarify that situation.

This entire topic has already been beaten to a pulp on these boards.
