PreTax vs Post tax deductions on W-2?

I am looking at a W-2 under "year to date deductions" and I see a "pretax medical plan" and I see a "march of dimes" (pretax does not appear on this one). So how does one know if the march of dimes was deducted before taxes were calculated? On anther W-2 from another Employer, it distinguishes the pretax by - (dash) next to the amt.

End of year paystub? I can't think of any reason why a charitable contribution from an employee would be pre-tax?

      It's just added information

There is a lot of stuff that can appear on a W2 that is for information only (and more to come in the future!). Likewise on a pay statement/YTD or whatever.

What is a "deduction" from an employee's net take-home pay (such as paying for a parking space at work, or payment for a car loan to the credit union) may have absolutely nothing to do with income taxes.

Anything that is pre-tax should already have been covered in the taxable/FICA/Medicare wages shown on the W2. The extra information on the W2 can come in handy for the client who wishes to deduct their (pretax) medical insurance on Sch A. ("But I PAID it!! - see here!!")

I've never heard of anything that would make a charitable contribution pre-tax....
