    TheTaxLibrary CD Edition

For those who prefer to view the CD pages in Adobe Reader (the way the 2009 WebCD worked), here is a possible solution:

    1) From the CD home page, click on one of the 1040 Edition tabs.
    2) In the tool bar just above the page display, click the save command, which is the second icon from the left that looks like a floppy disk.
    3) Save it to your desktop and name it TTB 1040 Edition 2010.
    4) From the CD home page, click on one of the Small Business Edition tabs.
    5) In the tool bar just above the page display, click the save command (same as step 2 above).
    6) Save it to your desktop and name it TTB SB Edition 2010.
    7) From your desktop, double click on either TTB 1040 Edition 2010 or TTB SB Edition 2010 icons. This should take you to the front cover of either book.
    8) On the left side of the screen, click on the Bookmarks icon. These bookmarks can be used to navigate to the first page of each tab. From the first page of the tab, use the table of contents links to get to the subject you are looking for.
    9) To do a word search, enter the word in the "Find" box in the Adobe Reader menu bar at the top of the screen and press enter.

To update these versions of TheTaxBook, you have to repeat the above steps each time the CD version shows that it has been updated. These PDF versions do not allow you to print pages, so if you need to print a page, you have to do it from the CD version.

Update – how to print text from the PDF document.

Although the print feature has been turned off when using this new PDF version, you can still print by using the copy command, paste into a Microsoft Word document, and then print from the Word document.

For example, let's say you want to print the paragraph "Exclusive Use Test—Business Use of Home" found on page 5-13 to give to one of your clients. Highlight the text you want to print with your computer mouse, then right click on the highlighted text and choose the copy command. Now open up a new Word document, right click on the page and choose the paste command. The highlighted text from page 5-13 should appear in the Word document. You can then print the text by using the print command from the Word document.

Perhaps an even better way to print text that retains the same formatting from the PDF document is to use the snapshot command.

For example, let's say you want to print that same paragraph from page 5-13. Go to the "Tools" menu from the Adobe Reader menu bar at the top of the screen, then choose "Select & Zoom", then choose "Snapshot Tool." Then using your mouse, draw a box around the text you want to print. After the box is drawn, Adobe Reader should give you a message that says "The selected area has been copied." Now open up a new Word document, right click on the page and choose the paste command. The highlighted text from page 5-13 should now appear in the Word document with the same formatting as it has in the PDF document. You can then print the text from the Word document.

The Snapshot Tool is a good way to copy and paste an entire page from the PDF version.

While I appreciate this workaround, well, sort of a workaround, it is a poor substitute for poor design changes of the CD. Thanks for taking the time to post this.

Yes, I agree. It is like a tool that you expect to work at least as hard as you worked for the the money you used to pay for it.

This is NOT working . If a work around (that is not a solution for me) is possible by you ..........TMI would win some really great respect and likely repeat sales next year -------- IF YOU TURNED YOUR "WORK AROUND" INTO AN UPDATE FOR ALL OF US WHO PAID FOR IT, INTO A EASY TO PRINT TOOL (maybe before March 1,2011) . YOU CAN HANDLE THE CHALLENGE - OR CAN YOU?

        Sharpen your saw.

          Working on a solution....

We are interested in your opinions about our electronic products. With the introduction of TheTaxLibrary web portal this year, the format of the CD version was changed to work similar to the new online version. I assume some of you who are not happy with the new format of the CD version would prefer it to work the same way it did last year. Would that solve the problem? Or do some like the new version better?

            Old version

I prefer the old version. I will probably use the web version next year due to the slow updating process of the CD verfsion.

I'm glad I got the Web version, but from what I'm reading the CD version was poorly designed and incomplete.

                Brad

I sent an email to the company yesterday stating that I preferred last year's version much better. It is important to enhance our products, so would it be possible to give us a choice of which version we like better or just address a few of the concerns with the newer version?

I also prefer the old version. It worked with my way of doing things. This doesn't work at all for me and I have given up on it. The main thing I used it for was search and printing out copies for client's files. It basically doesn't work for me for either of those two things. Not conveniently at any rate..

Ditto. In fact I returned this year's CD and opted for the hard copy. (Which I know I'll never keep up to date.)

I really love the web portal, except

I haven't figured out how to print a range of pages. Can only print one by one.
