I may be one of the few people on the planet do not own or use a cell phone. I've had computers since I was a teen - 30 years ago. I'm no stranger to tech...I just don't like cell phones.

For one thing, users feel entitled to take phone calls where ever they are. There is nothing that important that someone needs to be 'on-call' at all times. And there is little that people say of interest regarding the minutia of their day that needs to spoken within ear shot of total strangers.

I politely inform my clients that their phone should not ring in my office.

Someone agrees with me! I have one in the car, but it is NEVER around during a tax or other appointment. I remind people that I charge by the hour, and that usually stops people from taking calls. If they do, I don't continue working, I just stop and look at them while I'm billing time.

Carrying a cell phone turns out to be for the convenience of someone trying to track you down and alter what you are doing. An increasing number of people don't even get ANYTHING done.

Since I don't carry one, people who expect me at 3:00 and whom I expect at 3:00 know they have to be there instead of knowing they can use the cellphone to kabbluberate my schedule. It is amazing how effective planning and execution can be under these circumstances.

And the truth about emergencies....not to sound cold, but,...is what can you really do? Mom will still be in the emergency room when you get home to your answering machine. Unless you have the power to heal...tracking you down isn't neccessary.

I refuse to take my wife's cell phone to the store...if case there is something she forgot to right on the list. It's an excuse for being forgetful.

You're right though...the cell is just a device used to track you down and alter your actions.

Don't even get me started about ringtones.

Is pretty much a joke. People turn them off, turn off the ringer or see who is calling and blow them off.

I use it as a computer to access information. I use the gps to find my destination. I have several apps for many other purposes. It is merely a tool. Kind of a electronic Swiss Army device.

I agree with Snag & RG.

I have a BlackBerry Boostmobile phone so I would not have to get a contract phone. I've really not been using it to its full potential. I just don't turn it on unless I am going somewhere. Close family are the only ones that have the number. No one else will get it after I gave out my cell to clients one time and that was the only number some would call.

I had a client tell me other day that he was too busy to talk on the phone to "text" him. He is too busy for the phone but he can text? I also don't know how to text on my blackberry.

I also pull over if I am driving and family calls. I am not sticking something in my ear to talk. Not going to turn it on speaker unless I am stopped. I can't pay attention to the road while talking on the phone. The last time I did was driving back from college and I took the wrong road. I stopped after that.

For MY Convenience

I can do everything on my iPhone. But, I have it on vibrate. I don't answer it when I'm working or when driving or socializing or.... I pick up messages from voicemail when I want to. Only family has my cell number. (A few older clients have it as that was my business number when I began. But, I let their calls go to voicemail and call them back from my office line, so have trained all but one of them to use my office line if they want me to pick up!) It's my GPS and mini computer and my tool when away from home. It's not anyone else's tool to find me.

for 25 years. Amazing but that is just old technology.

Smartphones are much more.

Now if they could integrate my Glock in there some how it would all be good.

either, and hate when anyone calls me on one. they fade in and out or they just die!
