    If taxpayer recieves some tuition assistance and a form 1098 t, but decides not to go to school, is the money taxable to them and where would it be included on return?

    According to Pub. 970, "if the taxable amount was not reported on a W-2, also enter 'SCH' and the taxable amount on the dotted line next to line 7."

      This would apparently mean you are concluding that the "tuition assistance" mentioned in the original post came from an employer??

      A Form 1098-T was mentioned, so does that mean the "scholarship" box on that form had an entry??

      (I guess I am having a hard time figuring out how someone could receive "tuition assistance" where there was no education expenditure to justify it.)
