    Update

Got this today in my NAEA E@lert:

Hold on; Hold Fast; Hold Out. Patience is Genius.

Yes, notwithstanding prognostications from E@lert, we reached the end of the week without seeing the final EA/ERPA user fee regulations. In addition to sending Ye Olde Trusty Magic 8 Ball back to the shop, this means we still must wait for the renewal window for EAs with Social Security Numbers ending in 4, 5, and 6. We've been covering this issue since IRS first announced the delay (see October 22, 2010 E@lert) and we stress to those of you in cycle that you will continue to be considered an enrolled agent in good standing. Announcement 2010-81 provides the details and, at three pages, is worth re-reading.

Update as of 3-4-11 EA Renewal

Here is the latest from NAEA on EA renewals for those of us that have SSNs ending in 4,5,or 6
      4 March 2011

      RETURN PREPARER OVERSIGHT NEWS
      Plus Ca Changeā€¦
A reliable source tells E@lert that the EA/ERPA user fee final regulations have finally reached the Treasury Department, where they must be cleared before going to the Office of Management and Budget for final clearance. The fact that the final regs have left the Chief Counsel's office and are out of 1111 Constitution Avenue is good news, but cannot offer a good guess as to when they will be published in final format. We also wish to remind all of those who are in cycle (SSNs ending in 4, 5, or 6) that you will continue to be an enrolled agent in good standing, notwithstanding the fact that the date on your card will soon indicate otherwise.
For those of you representing clients and who are concerned that IRS enforcement (e.g., revenue agents or revenue officers) may question your ability to practice on what looks like an expired card, we request you inform the NAEA government relations staff immediately should that happen. We have received assurances from the IRS National Office that they will address any such troubles we bring to their attention.
Further, OPR has updated its portion of the IRS website (under "Latest News from the Office of Professional Responsibility"). Clients may contact the Detroit Office of Practitioner Enrollment (at 313.234.1280) to request the status of an enrolled agent by simply providing the EA's name (first, last, and middle initial) as well as city and state (E@lert suggests that the EA number may also be helpful).
For further information, please consult last week's E@lert for details, including IRS' initial announcement of the delayed renewal cycle (Announcement 2010-81).
I find this process frustrating and do not like! But guess we have no choice

          Still nothing on EA Renewal

I went to the IRS Renewal page and it now just asks for everyone to contact them with address changes.

            NAEA as of 5-27-11

Well the weekly Friday NAEA arrived and still nothing on the EA renewal for those of us that are in limbo
Stop Me If You Think You've Heard this One Before
E@lert is in a position to repeat last week's message with respect to the pending release of the final Circular 230 revision. You haven't missed anythingā€”the final revision is still not available and neither is Form 8554 for EA renewals. E@lert is extremely sympathetic to the hazards of predicting when IRS/Treasury counsel will produce guidance and can only suggest that we will not see that document today, though we still should see it sooner rather than later.
FYI* for all that are in the same renewal period that I am in .

I saw a notice that says they are ready to start the renewals so we should be getting letters shortly. The price has gone way down due to the PTIN registration.

                From the IRS Site

Final regulations relating to the imposition of user fees for Enrolled Agents:

The renewal period for enrolled agents whose social security number or tax identification number ends in 4, 5, or 6, is reinstated beginning June 1, 2011. This renewal period will conclude on August 30, 2011 with the IRS expecting to process these applications and issue enrollment cards before November 28, 2011, 90 days after the end of the enrollment period. Renewal of enrollment will be retroactive to April 1, 2011, for enrolled agents who come within the provisions of Announcement 2010-81 and who property renew their enrollment before August 31, 2011.

Note: Pursuant to the regulations the user fee for new EA and ERPA applicants is $30 beginning April 19, 2011.

However, the particular form hasn't even been approved yet, so isn't yet available.

                    EA Renewal

Exactly for those of us caught in the "current renewal cycle" there is no form - and I doubt that I will be receiving in the mail this next week as outlined.

I could care less about the fees now - I just want to RENEW!

                      EA Renewal

This is from the IRS website Tax Pros OPR

Final Regulations Relating to the Imposition of User Fees for Enrolled Agents
The renewal period for enrolled agents whose social security number or tax identification number ends in 4, 5, or 6 is reinstated beginning June 1, 2011. This renewal period will conclude on August 30, 2011 with the IRS expecting to process these applications and issue enrollment cards before November 28, 2011, 90 days after the end of the enrollment period. Renewal of enrollment will be retroactive to April 1, 2011, for enrolled agents who come within the provisions of Announcement 2010-81 and who properly renew their enrollment before August 31, 2011.

Don't know, but looks as if it may be June 1 before you can submit.

                        Missing the Point

All of this has been posted.

The form 8554 for renewal still as of this date, does not appear to have been released, without the renewal form - we can't renew!

I just sent an email to opr at irs.gov

                          Update from OPR

I emailed and asked when the form 8554 would be released and this is the reply I received this morning.

The renewal process will begin on June 1, 2011. We will not be mailing the form out. It will be available on our website www.irs.gov- Tax Professional-Enrolled Agents. It will also be available via www.pay.gov for electronic submission.
                          Thank-You

Am I understanding correctly that we still have to pay the full $125 if our "enrollment cycle began before 4/1/11"?

                                Form 8554

Just completed the form 8554 and made payment online - pretty easy and also received an email confirmation.

Go to www.pay.gov where you can complete application, make payment and submit online.
