    Motorhome delivery

My relative is starting another occupation. Currently has rental units, is a realtor, handyman and sub teacher. Now he will be contracted to deliver (drive) new motorhomes to dealers(has trucker's license). First he drives to the city to pick one up, 100 miles and then will be assigned a delivery. They pay him $500 plus a "good" allowance for gas. It sounds as though everything will be 1099'd to him. His costs are gas, food, lodging and cost of getting back to his home. The costs of getting back (how cheap) evidently has a direct bearing on how financially successful the trip is (per the manufacturer). Is there a trucker's per diem that is better?? Anything else I should consider?? Do tax preparers NEED relatives?? No hurry his first delivery is this week-2011 tax return.

The "truckers perdiem" can only be used if he is subject to DOT hours of service rules. Can't imagine he would be since he is not moving freight or people but don't see why he couldn't use the regular per diem rates for food, actual cost for lodging. As always good records including a log book of his trips should be maintained. Is he towing his car behind or leaving it at the dealer?
In other words, a democratic government is the only one in which those who vote for a tax can escape the obligation to pay it.

Don't forget to consider the tax home issue.
