    Docs to retain

As efile preparer I know I am required to keep certain docs (W2s etc..), but what documents am I required to keep for paper filers?

Has it always been a requirement? I've never come across it before. Is it cited in 230 or 470?

I have always done it that way since 1975. It just made common sense to me. I was required to keep copies of tax returns so why wouldn't I include W-2s and 1099s with withholding.

I am pretty sure its not a requirement when doing a paper return. Not a bad idea, just not a requirement.

The IRS requires a list of returns prepared but states may require a lot more.

The states may also require a different retention period than the IRS.

I would think a clear scan of the W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, etc would be sufficient.
