    Diskeeper...

Windows XP has Defrag but it's not automatic. It can be with some extra work. I'll try to put together something.

Windows 7 - Defrag is also included but is already scheduled to run at regular intervals.

The version provided with windows is fine if automated for the average computer. The Company, Diskeeper licensed their product to MS for the operating system in all cases. However, they also offer a 'Better" version and in my eyes is worth the money. It has more bells and wistles to better clean up you drive.

Defrag? Okay I give, what it is - I Know, right? Here's an attempt to explain -
    Participants...

The Hard Drive (HD) this is where everything is stored. AKA: Filing Cabinet.
The Data (Data) is information you save (tax info, letters, etc).

The HD is not too smart actually in some ways. Or lets say he's disorganized.
Your important 25 page document needs to be saved (TaxDoc.docx).
When the request to SAVE is made the HD takes data and saves it. It does not stop to see where there's enough room to save the whole document in one place. So it gets scattered around in potentially thousands of places. Next time you OPEN the document the HD has to cruise around and get the thousands of pieces of data.

The free version hires lots of assistants to organize and index the piles of tax folders all over all of our desks when you tell it to.

The commercial version (Retail) hires intelligent assitants to intercept the data on the way to the hard drives. New documents proceed in an organized single file path like parking directors at Disney World or Great Adventure. They streamline parking and keep things organized. They also work all the time reorganizing data based on access frequency. Like assistants that know what files you need before you ask and hand them to you as you ask.

Like that but way more betterer!! 8-)
