    This is strange

I got this email today from the IRS.

Mind you the IRS debit was taken out in October and the card does not expire until the end of January. The bank will send a new replacement closer to the expiration date as they always do.

*** PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL *** This message is to remind you that your saved credit/debit card on the IRS Tax Professional PTIN Fee payment system is about to expire, or has already expired. The information currently on file about this credit/debit card is:
    Payer Name: XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
    Account Nickname: XXXXX
    Card Number: XXXXXXXXXXXXX9255
So what's the deal with this?

I've received these messages from retailer sites. I think it's so if you have some sort of auto purchase/pay plan, you will know to update. So, maybe the IRS does the same thing. They don't try to figure out who has their info listed and why. Just send it to everyone.
You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted, then used against you.

        Seems strange

If your credit card was charged, I don't see why they need to let you know it is expiring. I would think that when you renew, you could use a different card or update the expiration date on the old one when you renew.

I have some items that I have set up to automatically renew on my card and can understand why they would notify me if it is about to expire. I may decide to quit preparing taxes next year or some future year since I may get too old and feeble to do tax returns some day.
