    Simple NOL carryback question

I have not done one of these in forever. Have client with 2009 1040 NOL.

NOLs in 2006 and 2007 were carried forward and used in 2008 (a very good income year).

I can carryback 2009 NOL to 2008 even though that 1040 already had NOLs applied against the income, right?

It's still OK to just file 1040X with the addtional NOL on Line 21, right? Drake tax software is confusing me with form 1045 big time.

I forgot what needs to be attached to the 1040X I think it's just a copy of 2009 1040?

Just for fun, the 2008 return had AMT that will be affected, but I'm OK on that...

I'm asking the client if he would prefer to carry the loss forward but want to be ready for his questions.

    Thanks

    Carryback 2009 NOL to 2008 -- yes

Form 1040X -- no, you use 1045 during the calendar year after the NOL year; Form 1040X is only used after that time period.

Plus there is quite a lot that needs to be attached to the 1045. Read the instructions for the form - lists them for you.

If you are having software problems the best thing to do is print out what the program does automatically and compare with the instructions, write in what you need and tweek the program accordingly.
