    Basic bookkeeping program

I am looking for a basic bookkeeping program to recommend to a friend. I hope it is easy for her to enter income and expenses. And then it can generate the basic financial statements like Income Summary and Balance Sheet. That's it. Nothing fancy.

Does anyone knows an inexpensive and workable program like that?

    Pencil and paper!

Seriously, does your friend have some bookkeeping knowledge? Does she know what a balance sheet is and what an income statement is? Does she know how to classify transactions (Income, expense, asset, liability, equity)?

Before I recommend a program, I would want to know her level of education for bookkeeping.

Yes she does. She has worked as a bookkeeper before.

      Thank you for your help.

        Bookkeeping Program

        There is always QuickBooks.

There is also Peachtree. I use this for my own personal tax practice. www.peachtree.com

Also Creative Solutions. A Cadilla program that I use for my monthly clients. And expensive.

          Thank you for your advice.

I am using/have used these programs before too.

I wonder if there are other basic programs that can do the simple job that I described. Ideally it is a shareware which costs nothing. It doesn't have to do all the fancy stuffs like Peachtree or Quickbook other than creating an income summary or a balance sheet. I hope someone here will know a program like this.

            Peachtree and Quickbooks

Peachtree and Quickbooks are both low-cost programs. You can keep using the same version for years if you use something else like Medlin or Drake's CWU for payroll.

I use Peachtree and haven't bought an update for several years. I use Drake which comes with CWU but before I switched to Drake I used Medlin.

Is that one still around? It's good old checkbook bookkeeping.

Quicken and Quicken Home and Business

Yes Quicken is still around and I still use it for some of my clients. It is simple, inexpensive, and you only need to upgrade maybe every 4 or 5 years.

The easiest one I know of is DOME, it works like the old Dome Record keeping books (and they are still arou nd). But they have a program for around 50.00 that is just like using the Dome books. Very simple, no bookkeeping experience needed. I bought one just to see how it works, and it is very good for someone with no experience.
