I have a client who has student loans (most with federal government) to assist in her obtaining a medical degree.
She read someplace that if she has student loans for the purpose of her acquiring a medical degree, that there is a student loan forgiveness program available perhaps to her. It is her understanding that if she does not pay back the student loan and it still exists after 10 years, the balance of the student loan will be forgiven.
It is my understanding that there is a provision in the 2010 Health Care Act (Health Professionals Loan Repayment Tax Relief) that PPAC 10908 excludes from gross income payments made under any State loan repayment or laon forgiveness program that is intended to provide for the increased availability of health care services in underserved or health professional shortage areas.
Is there an IRS Publication that addresses the above? In the absence of an IRS Publication, is there an internet link you can point me to?
Thank you.
