I am with JG, I want to be at the forefront of remitting and registering for PTIN, etc. but I am so darned busy with 9/15 biz filings, and can't hardly wait to finish off my delinquent extensions for 1040 forms
so if anyone has any info and can "toggle" us to do what we need to do as soon as implemented I would truly appreciate it.

Simplified explanation
In a nutshell it looks as if you soon have to renew/obtain PTIN (and pay the $65 annual fee), plan to take at least two full days of courses each year to meet IRS guidelines, and get your ERO #/efiling mojo in gear without further delay.I am with JG, I want to be at the forefront of remitting and registering for PTIN, etc. but I am so darned busy with 9/15 biz filings, and can't hardly wait to finish off my delinquent extensions for 1040 forms

Confusion
It was my understanding for PTIN - there was no testing - only application and fee and then there would be an additional competency testing ifCan someone clarify?In addition to mandatory PTIN use, the IRS has also proposed competency testing for unenrolled preparers. CPAs, attorneys, enrolled agents and certain other credentialed practitioners who are active and in good standing with their respective licensing bodies would be exempt from proposed competency testing. The IRS intends to offer two competency tests to unenrolled preparers starting in 2011.

Application for PTIN beginning sometime in Sept 10
Access to an online sign-up system will be available through

If you prepare individual tax returns, you know what you have to do (and if you don't, go to the IRS site noted above to learn). The when is still a bit vague, but probably beginning this month and definitely before 1 January 2011. Now, if you prepare only payroll returns, for instance, your requirements are being clarified. I'm in no rush to be a beta tester of their online registration and in no hurry to pay the IRS sooner than I have to.Comment

Just a side note….you have to be current on filing all tax returns. Thus, since I am always on extension until October 15th, I can’t renew my PTIN until after October 15th.Comment

I too am on extension and not renewing my PTIN until later this fall.
However, if you will have to test (I don't have to as an EA), you will want to get your PTIN before testing is available to buy yourself some time before you have to test. Once testing is available, you cannot get a PTIN without passing the test if required.Comment

What test are you all talking about? Haven't heard of any yet. What is it about and where to take it; do they send you something in the mail and a form to send money for the PTIN# too?
Sorry but I am really confused about all of this and don't want to wait the very last minute to do anything because the first of the year till April I am way to busy to think of stuff like this.
Any info on this matter would be very appriciative so I can start early on what I have to do.
