Married to someone who has children from a former relationship is ok for EITC, dependency, etc. Stepchild is a permitted relationship. Do you have reason to believe they are not hers, they are not actually married, etc.? Ask for a birth certificate then. To get the SSNs for the kids, didn't they have to prove relationship?

Our "obligation" is to inform the client that return needs to be amended - then it is totally up to the client to decide to amend or not!
I think the "suggestion" to turn them in was not to force them to pay for an amended return but to help clean out the pool of tax cheats?! (and as an added bouns if they are auditing that tax cheat maybe they wont have enough resources to aggravate some other taxpayer that is NOT cheating but is treated like they are by IRS?)Comment
