    Battling States and Efile

Why is it that some electronic filing info does not transmit to States?

Just had a Hawaii issue on an out of state other Tax credit,
Hawaii just disregarded the Other State Tax credit
And billed the client for that exact amount of the Other State tax Credit

And after phoning, and getting through a few Representatives, was advised to just mail with the notice of assessment, a copy of the Out of State Tax Credit and the other State Tax Return.

None of this information was posted on the State of Hawaii notice, they just billed!

I though this was what efile was all about

So now I have to print, and take time, and mail and in the meantime the client thinks I didn't do my job

    Sorry, just venting

    Hawaii problems

Very common problem here in Hawaii. It appears that all of the various bits of data are sent to the State, but the State does not pick everything up on their end. Bozos.

      Oregon special handling

We fax in a copy of the other state return after e-filing.

        No faxes

I offered to fax info, but Hawaii said no faxes, they do not accept

Mail copy of notice, and all supporting info.

        Ugh!

More delay in resolving, but Hawaii is sure quick to send out billing notices, with NO explanation!

        Okay I feel better!

        Thanks,

        Sandy

Just as the IRS has a defined file format for filing tax forms electronically, each state also has a defined file format unique for that specific state's tax return forms and that format is not the same as any other state or the same as the IRS format. So unless the state has their system programed to read every other states file they can not verify the information for the other states tax returns. Most states require the mailing of that state's return along with the return for any other state for which a tax credit is being claimed so that the amount of the tax paid to the other state can be verified.

The above assumes that all states involved participate with the Federal state e-file program, but not all states do.

Some states do not require the tax forms form the bordering states, so one needs to verify the filing requirements of each state involved and whether e-filing is for that specific state is possible.

had that same problem back in the first days of Georgia and Alabama state filings.
Since I'm on the border and do returns for both states, most often was a credit for that other state on the resident return. Neither state received any efiled information about the other state's return. The only entry on, say the GA 500 would be the simple line item for "other state credit", not even identifying which state.

So after a few years of periodically (not every case) getting letters, they finally gave up and simply now accept the line item without question. Unless audited of course.
