    Change from itemized to standard?

I have looked through TTB and the IRS website and cannot find any reference to this question.

Can anyone tell me if there is a prohibition to filing an amended return and changing from itemized deductions to standard? All the info refers to what you can deduct, etc but cannot find if this change is allowed.

    Thanks,
    LT
Only in government or politics is a "cut in spending" really an increase. It's just not as much of an increase as they wanted it to be, therefore a "cut".

It is not prohibited, if you take a look at Pub 17 on page 143. You can change your mind either way, itemized to standard or standard to itemized on the 1040X. I didnt look it up in the TB but I am sure its got to be in there somewhere.

Why are they changing? Just curious. Did they initially itemize for state puurposes or did they just make an error in itemizing instead of using the standard deduction?

      Thanks.

The previous preparer claimed the son's ss on the return. Removing that income and changing to standard deduct will give additional refund.

Now I'm More Confused than Usual

Why did the previous preparer put the son's SS income on parent's return? I have tried and I can't think of any reason to do that.

Don't know. He was in Utah and has had heart attack. See "Minor Child ss" titled thread for the discussion on this.

Why do previous preparers do anything? I've heard of one take Sec 179 on a vehicle transferred from hubby's Sch C to wife's Sch C, and this is from a CPA who is supposed to know better! No EA would ever make a mistake like that. That's why I like EAs. They don't make heinously dumb mistakes. I believe one needs 3 letters in order to really screw something up. That's why we get paid more. It all makes sense.

IRS auditor caught that one and old boss is providing rep services for the 2007 and 2008 field audits. Thank heavens it's not my client now or ever. I turned them down today for bookkeeping/tax services going forward. No thanks. Sorry. The pitter patter sound of my tiny feet as I run like the wind.
