    Sign return for taxpayer

Somewhere in the back of my mnd, I seem to remember hearing that an enrolled agent can sign returns for the client. Is this true?

Does it apply to tax returns as well as payroll tax reports like 941's?

I can't remember where I heard that and so have no idea where to look to find out.

    Thanks.

    Extensions

Why would you ever sign a return. You should not. Power of attorney needed. Your LIABILITY would grow, even on a 941.

      Amend

Had to amend last year's 1065. Marked box "Final return" by mistake. Client lives out of town so thought it would be easy to do that if it is allowed.

I will fax it to her and have her mail it in.

EA's are able to sign the extension forms - but I don't think the form 4864 needs to be signed anymore.

Personally, I would never sign a tax return even if it were allowed and especially not the payroll reports or you could have liability issues w/ the payroll tax due as well.

          Good point

I used to telefile 941's, but we can't do that anymore. I will start doing them on line now tht I am set up to do that. December's reports had to be mailed, thus they had to be signed.
