Form 8879/Software

Does the tax prep software that you use allow you to print the Form 8879 even if you are not ready to E-File the return. Maybe a minor adjustment may need to be made after client leaves your office, that will not affect any figures on the Form 8879. The software I use gives me a red audit and will not allow me to do so.

ATX does allow printing of the 8879, but you must click the e-file bar to actually add the DCN to the form. Otherwise, the form has all zeroes, but it can still be printed.

In my ProSystem fx, I can print the form at any time. As has been mentioned, I would get all zeros for the DCN. I've done that and written in the DCN when filed. Or, I can tell it to export for e-file, at which time it prints out any and all signature forms with DCN but then cancel before the export (or even let the export continue but never release it for e-filing until it's overwritten with the final version); that way I do get the 8879 with the DCN printed on it.
