I downloaded the TRX program, and have spent about an hour looking at it. Looks pretty good to me, especially for 299. I have a list of questions to ask, and I have not done any returns in it yet.,, But it is worth looking at. What are other people's opinions?

and just rrenewed for next year. They are includiing the business modules again for the $299. I haven't a need for them, but they are there should the need arise. As I've mentioned before, they will be including a document manager this year that's usually offered for $199. The way I see it, I get a lot for $299. The customer support was great and I didn't buy more software than I need. If it's Taxworks, which I've never used, I am impressed. The learning curve was not too overwhelmng for me. I like challenges so never saw a problem.

I formerly used TaxSlayer for 10 years. The $500 savings was a great motivator to switch. I have not regretted my decision.

I would like to work with it more, but I think I will go ahead and order it today, to get their special. So far I have not see anything that gives me trouble, called tech support a couple of times, and got good help. I am going to start putting in my tax returns from last year. I figure if I do one a day I will have them all done before next year, and I will have the program mastered. And I will not have to wonder how their conversion works. I do wish they had a Forum like this one for their program. Peachie, let me know how the program works for you.

Jan if you have questions and I will do whatever I can to help you. E-mail is peachie1000@hotmail.com.

The program works great for me and you are doing a good thing by inputting your returns from last year. A good way to learn. I started with my tax return and did one or two others. TRX did my conversion from TSP and did a good job, I might add. I have already received my code for the document manager and will activate that in a few days.

I am trying to finish a CPE courrse offered by TTB so I can begin study for either EA or licensed tax preparer exams.

Just shoot me an e-mail. I''ll respond to you.

          Good luck.

The software offered by TRX is not TaxWorks Pro , it is a lesser version maybe 1040 Works or Works 1040 or something of that nature. It supposedly does not have the Asset Manager which will track depreciation and automate to different schedules, you have to calculate depreciation, and then enter on form 4562, will not import from K-1 forms, will not calculate 4797 forms from Asset Mgr, will not calculate 1031 exchanges, and a lot of other features that the TaxWorks Pro version has. The program will just require a lot of other manual calculations to be entered onto forms.

I was concerned, as I have been a TaxWorks Pro user since 2003 when I switched from LaCerte due to cost factors.

So this is the information I received from the Sales Rep. I was told that Tax Works has actually contacted TRX to ask them to quit representing as the Tax Works Pro program.

What TRX is offering is viable for a lot of tax preparer's that have a small or limited practice and not involved in more complicated returns.

The product offered by TRX is a good basic low cost product if that is all your practice or client needs are.

I hope this information is helpful in your software decisions.

              Hi Sandy,

I am not sure about other preparers, but TRX never told me the program was Taxworks anything. In fact, the first time I ever heard the name Taxworks was from a sales person with Tax Slayer. When I was asked if the program was Taxworks, I had to honestly answer no because I didn't know anything about Taxworks. It was always pitched to me as TRX Pro 1040--never Tax Works.

Whatever it is--it's a great buy for me because I don't do the business returns except C and E. I had no problem with depreciation on the C or E. The main reason I switched from TSP was the price I had to pay for modules I didn't use. It was truly a waste of money. However, they did include the business modules for the $299 price, but I never had a use for them so no download for me.

                Maybe

                Peachie,
then Maybe what you have is another program and not the Taxworks - 1040 Works (not the same version that I have of Taxworks Pro, or ???

Could be some Software companies might be "little" upset by the marketing that TRX is doing and the discounted prices. I am not suggesting that you don't have a good program, just passing on information as it was fed to me by my Sales Rep as I was concerrned about the cost discrepancy and whether nor not what I have is being sold or resold by someone else at 80% discount

Sandy, and took o offense. Wonder if it could be some version of Taxworks? I will call my representative on Monday to see if I can find out for sure what platform TRX Pro is built on. I know last year they had Taxwise because they sent me a copy. The program I'm using is most like Taxwise to me. I'll find out and post a response.

I'm trialing the 2009 TRX software -it is taxworks but it is a somewhat lesser version (this was also offered by another outfit last year...I can't recall the name of that group).

If you look at the trial it doesn't have "flip" or a link to the asset manager.

BUT...the TRX Pro Version for 2010 is to have these functions. I took an online seminar the other day and one of the attendees asked that specific question and the answer was yes. So the TRX Pro for 2010 will be closer to the full version (if not the full version ) of taxworks.

TRX never told me it was Tax Works, or even mentioned the name. But when you open the program, my computer asks me if I am sure I want to run this program, and it says "Red Gear". I knew I had heard that name before, and did a google search, and looked at Tax Works program, and it looked very much the same.

I work at home and my clients are 3 very small partnerships and the rest are all 1040's, with E's, C's, etc. I work at home and only take clients I want. I got the TRX program, and I have put in 5 of my last years clients, and It is working OK, so far, for me. I have been with Drake for 8 years, and TRX works a lot like Drake. Yes there are some really nice things about Drake I am going to miss, so I will find a work around or do without. The main thing is, is the Tax Return prepared correctly.

Cutting back on the number of returns I do, has made the cost of software, research materials, and continuing edcuation, cost so much more per client, that I am looking for ways to cut those costs.

If you prefer Drake have you checked about a per return price?

                          TRX Pro

From the ATXCommunity.com web site, their TRX forum:

The add ons are as follows:

                          RIA Research

Client Write Up w/ Payroll fron (trx)

Fixed Asset Manager I assume from TaxWorks?

                          Document Manager From(trx)

I have not had the chance to review these add ons as yet. I intend to after the season!

I will report on my findings soon thereafter.

Mike Dubin CPA (also, lots of discussions on the unofficial ATX main forum, search for TRX &/or TaxWorks)
