Our dog, Molly, has hip dysplasia and we are at the point where she needs surgery as her pain is no longer controlled with medication. I'm wondering if any of you nice people have ever had any experience with this and would be willing to share. She is an adult dog around 50 lbs and will be 7 years old in August.

my daughter has a black lab who had the hip thing, he was just a year old when the surgery was performed and was told that it is a common problem with labs and shepards and that most likely the other hip will need the same procedure. well the hip healed up real good and within a few months he started limping again and the other hip needs it done.

I can sympathize
My 8-year old pug suddenly went blind. It is so sad, but she is actually doing very well. My 8 -month old Pekingese had her eye scratched and we had to have surgery to have her eye-lids removed since they were irritating the recovery. $2000 later she is doing fine. Our animals are just like our kids. We would do anything for them. Who else gives us unconditional love?

Just want to add another person whose dogs are her babies to your list of supporters, BHoffman. I always pray mine stay healthy over tax season. They are so patient to wait 3 mos for us, aren't they? Hoping for the best for Molly, and for you!
And goodness, Gary, your little babies! Glad they are doing well- what trials.
What? Oh, Cody & Mr. President say "Woof."

Household
They're all members of our household no matter how many legs they have. And, when they're ill, we research the options for them since they can't tell us what they want us to do for them. You're wise to talk to other dog owners who've had experience with that medical problem. Check your library or on line for a magazine devoted to your breed for medical articles as well as letters to the editor and features.

Not hips
Just got back from the surgery consultation and turns out that it's her knee and not her hip. Scheduled the surgery today. Thank you for your kind thoughts. We are so sad this happened to our friend, and hope she will be good as new soon. Going to be a very rough few days, I imagine. They are keeping her overnight to better control the post surgical pain with injectable drugs.
We opted for the more oldfashioned suture repair instead of the TPLO because if the suture repair fails, we can still have the TPLO surgery. If the TPLO surgery fails, then it is very complicated to fix.
I'm very grateful for your kindness.

I also wish the best for Molly. Can't give you info on the specific surgery she's having, but we did have a Lahsa Apso-Poodle mix named "Oscar" who lived to be 17 years old and he had to have a couple of surgeries for a problem with his colon. It was always more traumatic for us than it was for him. Do keep us posted on Molly's progress.
Hearing the comment about the dog licking the wounds reminded me of Oscar's plight. He was fitted with one of those lampshade collars to prevent him from getting his head around to lick the wound. Plus, they had to shave his entire rear end & half his rear legs prior to the surgery so he looked a sight. He wasn't very happy about all the paraphenalia either, and I think even Oscar felt a little embarrased about his general appearance..
I took Oscar to work with me for several days because he had to be walked every couple of hours around the clock to keep the muscles & internal structures loosend up. A good friend saw Oscar & me out in the parking lot and commented "John, I've heard of people whose dog was so ugly that they were told to shave his butt and walked him backwards so he'd look better, but this is the first time I've seen anybody actually do that!"Last edited by JohnH; 04-28-2010, 07:49 AM."The only function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectful" - John Kenneth Galbraith
