    Kid needs to file?

Kid in school gets a 1099 Misc for $500? She has to file as an independent contractor, right?

The payer was the schoool. i don't know why the school did that, 1099-misc, box 3 -- 'other income.'

No way around it though, is there?

(i don't want to charge for a return that not need be filed)

    Student paid by school

No, you're good to go. See TTB 5-18:

"A student of any age working for a school... exempt from FICA...if student attends classes..."

There is no FICA requirement, so student would not need to file. Since it's in box 3, IRS should be down with that, too. (It would go on line 7, or line 21, not Sch C.)
If you loan someone $20 and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
