    when client gets his amended return, i would show him the huge error that prior preparer made on that year's return and you may get more amended returns, and hopefully this client would spread the word about this untrained preparer (? i hesitate to call him that)

      As for the original post - I cannot believe anyone presenting themselves as a tax professional would ever show the child's Soc Sec benefits as income on the parents' tax return!

      Maybe they think it is a 'Kiddie Tax' taxable item.

      Also if the parent saves the child's benefit for college, it would not affect the dependency support. Remember that the parent/guardian can claim far market rent rates for determining housing cost if those rates are more than the actual cost expended. This comes into play when the parent/guardian owns their residence free and clear of any liens.
