    Amended Return, No Payment

I found a mistake I made on a client's return. It is in their favor thank goodness. They owed a couple of thousand and haven't made the payment yet.

Do I need to go ahead and prepare the amended return and change the original amount paid? Or just leave it as though they paid it and let it work itself out... meaning I may have to call the IRS later.

    Thank you for any help

I'm guessing you work as I do and efile all returns, and therefore the return has
    been filed.

So prepare the amended return, determine the difference and inform clients
to send in the correct amount with the voucher. then make sure they file the 1040x.

If clients will pay lower amount I would change the original amount paid to what was actually paid.
