Wrong tax year estimated tax coupons

Things happen and I made a silly mistake. I have printed the 2009 state estimated tax coupons for my client's 2010 state estimated tax (State of California). He has already sent one payment before he caught the mistake. Does anyone know how they are going to handle the situation? Will they refund the payment to the taxpayer or will they automatically credit it to his 2010 estimated tax? Also, it's the state of California and I wonder if every state handles situation like this differently.

Well, since no estimated taxes can be applied to 2009 at this point (2010), they should apply it to 2010 regardless of the voucher used. If the check has been cashed, (or when it is) you can get a copy of the back of it and you can tell what they did. The only thing someone who was on the ball might do, presuming they cared to question it, would be if it should be applied to a 2009 extension payment. My guess is, they won't. In my state estimated taxes sometimes go to local commissioners, and I have had them question things, but not when sent directly to the state.
