part year & full year OR part year & part year..

Why cant I not figure this out. Can a TP be "full year" resident of that state if TP was living in that state on 12/31/09 and spend Mar thru Dec there. Can the same TP be a "part year" resident of his former state for which TP lived there Jan & Feb of 09

OR

does the TP have to be part year for both states.

I think your choices are

the taxpayer was a part year resident of both states or a full year resident of one and a nonresident of the other.

I don't think it's stupid, you are just tired like the rest of us.
