Adopted, no SS number for 6 weeks

My new clients adopted a child last September but they won't have a SS number for 6-8 weeks.

I believe I cannot e-file without it, but I also believe I can paper file with "applied" on the line for the SS number.

That is how I did it many years ago. Have there been any changes in this? Any other options?

    Options...

One option would be to file an extension and wait for SSN then e-file the return.
That's all I have to say ... for now.

yes, "applied for" still works on a paper return. If they are claiming the adoption credit you will need to fill out all the extra stuff on page 2. That needs to be paper filed anyhow

I agree, file an extension. TheIRS will take as long to process a paper return with "applied" on it as it would take to wait for the SSN and then efile. However, just because they get the SSN doesn't mean it will be in theIRS database yet. TheIRS only updates with SSA occasionally, like every 3 months or something so it still may reject initially.

Form 8839- Adoption Expenses (if you are claiming) - Possi, you can have a look at p. 2, bottom right- "If you cannot give complete info . . . " for details on what to enter and statement to attach.

            Thanks!

Thanks! I'll let them know that the best thing to do is file an extension and e-file, knowing it might initially reject.

I HATE paper returns because the IRS turns them into something completely different. (See IRS Errors link) They'll have them adopting a furby or something!

I emailed and called him again today. Maybe I'm naive, but I really do not think he is dodging me....

This forum will know the results as soon as I know his deductions!

I have built quite a reputation for Legal, Safe, but aggressive tax returns, especially among the police force and my feelings are really hurt that one of my Main Cheerleaders has dissed me.

                =(

Times, they are achangin...we can no longer do things we used to do years ago. I don't think you can paper file with "applied for".

do the return including the child,.,.,if they are getting a refund, no problem. If they owe give them a 1040V and tell them to pay by the 15th File an extension and wait for the SS to file the return.

Possi, I don't think it will reject once the SSN is received. I would, however, have the client ask SSA how long it will take before it is in their computers. I suspect that the IRS has computer access to the SSN site and once it is in the SSA computer the IRS should be able to verify it without delay. Just don't efile the return until you know that SSA has entered the data into their database.
