IRS Reject re Economic Recovery Payment

I just received a reject notice from IRS regarding a joint return filed. It says :code 1132
Schedule M - Economic Recovery Payment Received does not match IRS records.
It makes NO difference since neither husband or wife had earned income and neither
was entitled to the Certain Government Retiree Credit. I accessed the IRS website
regarding her economic recovery benefit and it reported that she received $250. When I
accessed the IRS website for the husband it said:" Unable to give you any information
about an economic recovery payment." If so, HOW can IRS say that the amount
I entered on the tax return is wrong if their own website does not know how much he
was paid? I changed his amount from $250 to ZERO and efiled their returns again.

Is the person be any chance deceased? I've gotten that same message whenever I've tried the ERP lookup for a 2009 deceased taxpayer.

Yes, the husband died in january 2009 and only received $96 in social security benefits
during 2009. But he received social security benefits for the entire year of 2008. His wife
said that he DID receive the $250 economic recovery payment. You are right, that probably
      is the problem. Thanks.

        ERP problems

Other problems with verifying payments on the IRS Website:
        1. Taxpayer and/or spouse gave you wrong birthdates.
        2. Address on 1099SSA is different than what your return for 2008 showed. I had one that changed address from home to nursing home and another to daughter's home. During the year and SSA is using those addresses.

The first time I got that response on the site I didn't quite understand it either. What they meant to say is he didn't get anything....Sometimes you have to listen to what they meant rather than what they actually said. I learned that in my last career
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

I respectfully disagree. "Unable to give you any information about an economic recovery payment" does not mean "he didn't get anything".

In this case I simply changed the $250 economic recovery payment for the deceased
husband to ZERO which was the only other alternative. The wife said that he received
the $250 and he received social security benefits during Nov and Dec of 2008 and
January 2009. He died in Jan 2009. There was no earned income and no schedule
M credit either way. I e-filed the return again and it went through..

I've received that message in ERP lookup for a few deceased taxpayers who DID get the $250.

If he received benefits in Nov, Dec (2008) and Jan, he was entitled to the $250 sent out in May. Therefore, no benefit on the tax return. So they were actually correct in rejecting this time.
