Only the travel BETWEEN schools. Home to first school is commuting and last school to home is commuting.

If this is considered "special duty" and he is sanctioned by the department, uses his patrol car and wears his uniform then this is 2106 expense.
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

            Bob W is right.

If he is going from home to job location it is the same as driving to your regular job. Does not matter if he is on a 1099, is in uniform, or whatever. If he is driving the patrol car he for sure has no deduction because he is using the department vehicle.

              No patrol car,

nothing to do with normal w-2 sheriif job. Paid contract labor to go to various schools for football, basketball baseball games and provide security???

Normally one school per night and he is paid contract labor. Thought maybe he could get some mileage for it.

Only if he would go from his day to job to the second job. Then from the second job home would be non deductible commuting miles. If he went home in between there would no deduction either.
