This is pretty normal - the software companies figure you're not going to buy their software for 2009 anyway. So there is no lost revenue from this - but they can advertise a "buy 1 get 1 free" kind of deal. I think I've gotten similar emails from ATX and Drake. Just ATX so far this year though I think.

Drake has always had a program where if you contacted them they will send you a free year tax program to try. And you don't even have to buy the next year's to get it. I get calls from other software companies in November to try theirs, long after I have already paid for the next year so that I can get the discount. Maybe that is what they are trying to get ahead of.

Only in government or politics is a "cut in spending" really an increase. It's just not as much of an increase as they wanted it to be, therefore a "cut".

        Department, of course.

Until this year I used TSP. I am thinking they may have lost quite a ffew customers as my previous sales person phoned last week to inquire how I was liking my new program. When I sang the praises of the new program-she seemed disappointed and quickly ended the conversation.

My new tax program though is offering some extra incentives to its customers to renew by March 31-which I intend to do.

          Free programs

One year I had a return that couldn't be done correctly with ATX. I got free versions of Drake, Lecerte, ProSeries and some other programs after April 15 and did the return on all of these programs to find a program that would work. I also bought TaxAct for $ 99. which was the best of the bunch for that particular return, but did not provide some of the other things I needed.

I used both ATX and TaxAct for a couple of years, then switched to Drake.
