IRS Agts visit car wash for 4cts of back taxes...

The IRS has contacted a couple of my clients about a form that we knew upon submission, was NOT going to change the TP's taxes 1ct and we were correct and the IRS knew it ahead of time.

I saw the article, and I just can't help but believe there's more to the story...

I'm sure there is, since we only have the taxpayer's side of the story and IRS can't comment due to privacy. But anything that makes IRS look like an ogre is going to get wide coverage.

On a CP2000 last year for 2007, in the 90 day letter period, I had to contact IRS
(in Fresno, no less) and make sure that the 90 days wouldn't bend my client out of shape. Of course my timely response had not been processed and so the agent
merely took my information over the phone as to basis of stocks, did some figuring,
and came up with $5 less tax and I agreed. When I saw the final transcript on eServices, there was a $ 4.20 balance due (interest) but also a notation that all was forgiven due to the relatively small amount due.

I'm sure the fellow at the Sacramento car wash did NOT have an EA in his corner!

Maybe they were preparing for an audit and looking for the second unreported cash register receipts.

I also thought it was especially interesting that TWO agents showed up.

This is a normal if not frequent tactic used to gather intel for something bigger that they have on their agenda. Wait a while and as Paul Harvey says "you will hear the rest of the story."...............Just out of curiosity were they revenue agents (green picture ID cards) or CID (gold badges.) If the latter then criminal charges are on the agenda and time to get a good tax attorney involved.

              May be due to penalties

I was thinking that the balance due may have been penalties that accrued on the original assessment...Tax paid, but penalties were left unpaid...
