IRS telephone number re Economic Recovery Payment

I called the new IRS telephone number at 1-866-234-2942 to check to determine if an
Economic Recovery Payment was paid. It actually worked very well and took only
three minutes. It is automated and the data is entered by using the telephone keypad.
    It asks for:

    1. The social security number.
    2. The first five digits of the zip code.
    3. The date of birth.

This works MUCH better than the Social Security Number we were provided recently
which I consider to be absolutely worthless. We FINALLY have a means to check
    on these payments.

And remembering the sequence of questions asked, you can by pass the messages and
quickly input 1 - 1 - etc. to shorten the time.

I checked on a taxpayer (age 74) who does not draw Soc. Sec. - only state teacher's retirement. I was told that she got $250 payment from Soc. Sec. Her husband draws Soc. Sec. Did Soc. Sec. send the payments to spouses?

I just got around to using this number.
It works well, and does only take a couple of minutes.
          Thanks for posting it.
