A client earlier this year amended 2006, 2007, and 2008 NY returns for various/different reasons.
Client is now is receipt of two separate letters from NY (Kingston) stating numbers do not match, need more information, etc. The information being requested has absolutely nothing to do with the changes that were made on the amended returns.
In addition, they are asking for documents (such as Form 1099-R) that do not even exist for the tax year in question, but DO exist for a different tax year. (EXAMPLE: Where is the 1099-R summary for 2007? - "numbers do not match" - when there were no Forms 1099-R in the first place for 2007!!)
All amended returns were made using the "X" form/software specific for the tax year involved.
Client is at wit's end trying to respond to requests that simply cannot be fulfilled.
Is there a chance the NY computers have gone awry, or is this is a common problem?
Thanks for any and all insight from those of you who more frequently deal with State of NY returns.
