    Blind

I encountered the first client in years who may be entitled to the blind status and
if so this increases the standard deduction if not itemizing and will reduce the tax liability
in this case by about $165. I learned this by LISTENING to my clients. They were not aware
of this tax benefit. This seems to be rare but may become more common as people live
    longer.

An 85-year-old friend of mine who used to prepare his own return became legally blind several years ago and I've been doing it since he decided his vision was too poor to do his own. His house is mortgage-free, so he always gets the extra deduction. I used to attach a doctor's letter to his return before I started e-filing them.
