There is no such thing as a "nice guy" but there is....

I noticed that he did not have the form when he filed last year. I will amend 2008 for free just cause he's a nice guy, and he will appreciate it. Happy Friday.[/QUOTE]

Such a thing as a loyal (been client for yrs), honest (never lies), does not take advantage (first time this client had an error and needed to amend this clients return. Cliuent apologized and offered to pay for the amending), organized, healthy tax prep fee and also buys their insurance and investment thru me, CLIENT. That is my defination of a "nice client". : )

        Thanks, BP

Thanks, BP. Obviously, I don't do amendments during tax season! I think I like it, though, not having to force their original onto the same form as the amendment. Have to see how my software handles it, with and without original in software. But, as I say, hopefully not until after tax season!

I too amend for good clients, using my definition of good, at no or low cost. Have one who forgets to make her SIMPLE contribution more years than not (hey, she's a writer and numbers are not her thing, but she's usually my contact since hubby travels overseas a lot. I am now in contact with their financial advisor at their request, so maybe together we can keep her to the appropriate deadlines.) I also do their partnerships and sometimes the sons have investment income, so it's a pricey set of returns for the whole family. I've amended free but not until I find the time.

And, this year I'd like to have her open a SEP by 15 April and file an extension, just so it's there in case when we need it. But, QUESTION, can she open a SEP when she already has a SIMPLE, since a SIMPLE is supposed to be your only plan for your company? Can she open a SEP and not contribute to it when she remembers to contribute to her SIMPLE? If she forgets to contribute to her SIMPLE, can she contribute to a SEP for that year?

I also charge much more for an amended return if I didn't prepare the original. If the amendment is due because the preparer messed up I will encourage the client to go back to the preparer to have it done free.
