    Hsa 1099-sa

I do not see a lot of 1099sa distribuitons from HSA and I am not sure how to handle them.
I ask the taxpayer if all the distr. was used for medical and they say"yes" I attemp to fill out the form 8889 but how do I know the employers contribution.. It is not on her w-2, I assume that is only her contribuitons??????

What is your experience with distributions from HSA's

    Try to find out

Try to find out the employer contribution (if any). It SHOULD be in Box 12 of the W-2, coded "W" but I have seen more incorrect than correct. First one I worked on this year had BOTH employee and employer contributions in Box 12. The employer attached an explanation to W-2 which disagreed with the amount in Box 12, plus the bank statement for the actual HSA disagreed with both of those.

Bottom line, I think the main thing is finding out if the taxpayer took distributions in excess of medical expenses so IRS can collect, which you have done.
If you loan someone $20 and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
