    Audits continue to increase

According to this article on Yahoo/CNN. Discusses self employed

I've had 3 exam audits, 1 revenue audit and 2 correspondence audits in the last 18 months I completely agree with your observation. Both correspondence audits were over Form 2106. The service has been sending a letter every month telling us that it will be another month before they get to it for the last 6 months.
In other words, a democratic government is the only one in which those who vote for a tax can escape the obligation to pay it.

I've had 3 field audits in the past year. All them closed with no change.

One for Sch C and EIC. This was a TCMP style audit.

One for a large charitable contribution to a nonprofit that, as of today, still qualifies but is targeted by the IRS. IRS found nothing wrong on the client side but continues to challenge the nonprofit organization.

One SCorp for showing a lot of advertising expense.

Since I only prepare around 200 tax returns per year, it was puzzling to me why so many returns were pulled for audit. I have no "questionable" practices, have never been in any kind of trouble, have a low profile, a good reputation, work only on referral, and am very selective regarding new clients.

Unless I have been specifically targeted by some unknown enemy ( and that's hardly likely) I'd say that we all should be expecting more audits.

Do you guys charge your clients for the time to help them to respond to an audit?

Absolutely...150. per hour, to include prep and travel time.
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.
